Supporting Our Work

Why do organisations support BOHRF? In the words of one of our sponsors:

'The Royal Mail Group is a large company. We take our responsibilities seriously. We want to keep up to date, and to base our work on the latest research evidence. Difficult times concentrate minds on efficient use of resources … which is why we strongly support BOHRF'

Our research pipeline

Employers and their professional advisers, in the private and public sectors, generate the key questions to which evidence based answers are needed. We have developed an effective process to convert these questions into proactive projects by asking two centres of research excellence to submit proposals for each project, and selecting the best for funding. We also offer opportunities for other research teams to bid for funding on an equal basis.

Details of pipeline content are available to bona fide organisations considering supporting our work. Please e-mail Brian Kazer at admin@bohrf.org.uk or telephone him on 0207 317 5898.

Your choices

There are many ways in which your organisation can support BOHRF:

Sponsorship is appropriate for organisations which believe in improving occupational health. Sponsor donations are used to seedcorn fund all our research projects. They also enable BOHRF to continue to exist. The benefits to your organisation include:

  • advance full copy of final report of all projects started during your period of sponsorship
  • annual research day at which researchers present emerging findings from their work, giving sponsors an early opportunity to implement evidence based solutions to further improve the health/motivation of their employees
  • access to robust evidence-based findings, directly applicable at work
  • 'for profit' organisations can offset costs against corporation tax, achieving savings of up to £3,700
  • supporting a corporate social responsibility agenda which improves health in:
    • the community. Research funded by BOHRF, focussed on 'what works based on the evidence', is designed to improve the health of the community which is at work, making a substantial contribution to the government target of a 30% reduction in the 33 million working days lost each year in the UK to work-related ill health by 2010
    • your people. Your sponsorship of BOHRF is a clear statement to your people that you are genuinely committed to their good health. Sickness absence typically costs 8 – 16% of payroll – sometimes more. Reducing this by the application of research funded through BOHRF makes it more likely that your people will be healthier, perform better at work and remain so in the future because of the competitive edge you gain by reducing absence
  • influencing which research and evidence based guidelines BOHRF funds
  • supply chain benefits – support of BOHRF demonstrates your commitment to the health of people at work to major UK customers such as DoH and MoD, both funders and sponsors of our work
  • access to a network of like-minded organisations/individuals
  • publicity for your support for us on our web site, in our publications etc.

Project funding is particularly appropriate for organisations which have a direct interest in the aims and objectives of their particular project. Project Funders:

  • can claim a tax rebate of 125% of the value of the project funding they give to BOHRF, under R&D tax credit rules. This achieves savings of £3,750 for every £10,000 of funding
  • participate in the Steering Group of their project, networking on best practice with people from other sectors
  • receive advance copies of the interim and final reports of the project to which they have contributed funding.

Fully funding a project – You may wish to offer to fully fund a particular project. Benefits include

  • objective and independent findings are assured through BOHRF
  • reputation enhancement
  • robust methodology is assured through our independent peer review process and scrutiny by the independent FOM Research Committee
  • 125% tax break on your funding

If this is of interest to your organisation, please telephone Brian Kazer on 020 7317 5898 to discuss indicative costs.

Bronze level sponsorship

Ways in which you can help us at lower cost include:

Sponsoring a specific item

  • sponsoring the launch of a project – cost generally £5k – £7.5k
  • sponsoring a specific deliverable associated with a particular project e.g. summary of evidence for managers and workers, summary of evidence for occupational health professionals etc.
  • sponsoring our website updates and development

Funding in kind

Giving time and expertise to BOHRF is enormously valuable to us. Expertise that is especially helpful includes

  • fundraising by high calibre sales people
  • marketing and branding, including publicity and profile
  • peer reviewing
  • evidence review working group membership

Benefits to you include:

  • supports the CSR agenda of your organisation
  • peer review and working group membership
  • will normally count towards CPD in your professional body
  • simply donating time to help a charity that seeks to make a difference to the right of people to be healthy and motivated at work

Employers' Organisations

You can help us by:

  • raising our profile with your member companies e.g. through linking to BOHRF funded evidence reviews/research on this site that is relevant to your members
  • becoming a partner funder for a particular piece of research by arranging consortium funding amongst some of your member companies

Organisations that have a significant interest in occupational health, including mental health, ageing workforce, performance at work and diversity issues, can help provide evidence-based work of real practical application by linking to relevant items on our website.

Organisations that already link to us in this way include HSE, DWP, the Department of Health, Scottish Executive and a number of international organisations.

Making a donation

If you would like to help but cannot afford any of the above options, we can put any and all donations, however small, to very effective use.

Saying 'Thank you'

We agree with our supporters the way in which their support can be publicly recognised or, alternatively, we will treat support confidentially.

How our supporters can influence what we do

We also listen to our supporters – for example, our focus on research and guidelines of practical value is in direct response to their comments. We consider funding research, guidelines and reviews of evidence suggested by our supporters. Our Trustees also take into account our supporters' views when considering grant awards.
