Funding Policy
What We Will Consider Funding
We only consider funding research or evidence reviews in occupational health, which can include
- Biomedical
- Psychosocial
- Ageing workforce
- Performance/productivity
- HR domain provided it relates significantly to occupational health e.g. diversity, dignity at work
We prefer to fund work that is of international relevance.
We will normally only fund research that has outcomes that have direct practical application at work (preferably to both private and public sectors)
What We Will Not Fund
- Commercial organisations (and we will not endorse the product/service of a commercial organisation)
- Individuals
- MSc or PhD awards/grants (The Colt Foundation will consider funding PhD awards)
- Training
Overheads
We recognise that research teams are generally expected to include a significant contribution to the overhead costs of their organisation in their grant application. Whilst sympathising with this, we must emphasise that, as a charity, our donors expect us to maximise their contributions to research. As members of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) we support AMRC policy on this issue, which, in essence, is that it is a function of government, not charities, to fund the overheads of universities.
However we will normally fund the superannuation/NIC and PI insurance of the lead researcher (the researcher doing the work) on a pro rata basis. The decision on this rests with our Board of Trustees.
Grant Award Basis
- Ethical approval is required before the BOHRF Board will agree a grant. Applicants are asked to consider whether local ethical committee or MREC approval is more appropriate for their research proposal
- Ethical approval does not apply to evidence reviews.
- All grant applications will be subject to peer review by reviewers selected by BOHRF (we will consider reviewers suggested by the applicant)
- Evidence review reports are also subject to peer review on receipt. This applies both to stand alone evidence reviews and evidence reviews that form part of a larger piece of work
- All applications are subject to scrutiny by the FOM Research Committee on behalf of BOHRF
- Applications agreed by the Board for funding will be subject to an agreed contract including staged payments linked to specific agreed staged deliverables
- Applications agreed for funding that depend on access to organisations will be conditional on proposed host organisation(s) confirming in writing that necessary access will be provided
- Grants are made either on a financially unconditional basis (where the Board agrees to underwrite the full cost of the research from unrestricted funds before seeking project funding partner contributions) or, alternatively, on a financially conditional basis (where the award of a grant is dependent on BOHRF obtaining written commitments from partner funders to a stated percentage of total research costs prior to a contract being signed).
- Although we do not fund research involving animals, we do recognise the vital contribution that such work, properly carried out and with animal welfare in mind, makes to medical research
What Successful Applicants Will Be Asked
- To make a presentation at our Annual Research Day about the emerging findings of their research and discuss these with the audience
- To make presentations to the project advisory board where the grant is part funded through partnership funding. This will normally be a presentation prior to the research starting and then when the key stage deliverables are available.
