Call for research bids

Grant applications should reach BOHRF by the end of August 2008. Grant application closing dates for our next two rounds are end December 2008, and end July 2009.

Topics in which we are currently interested include the following.  Please see our page on Applying for a Grant, or telephone Brian Kazer at 020 7317 5898 for a preliminary conversation.

Management of occupational health risks

  • Does CBT help unmotivated employees prepare for return to work (one deliverable to be on-line e-tool for employers not having occupational health access to help them return people to work)
  • What is the best value in £’s spend on occupational health and wellbeing (beyond legal requirements)
  • Development and validation of occupational health algorithm (which can link with protocols)
  • Evidence based fact sheets (e.g. as “table mats”) for line managers on effective management of common occupational health issues e.g. mental health; musculoskeletal disorders, triple by pass cases returning to work)

Performance at Work

  • Evaluation of how different organisations manage sick presence in UK
  • Line manager guidelines for identifying occupational health problems in people who are at risk of going off work: how to intervene effectively before they go off and how to succeed in keeping them in work
  • Mental health of the older workforce: development and validation of optimum way to develop resilience in older workers
  • Long term absence: effective ways to predict which long term absentees are likely to return to work (in context of workers with conditions etc that may result in above one year absence)

Delivery of Occupational Health Provision

  • Validation of effectiveness of different methods of delivery of different occupational health advice (remote delivery; telephone; internet) (NB This being for organisations not having the resource to employ occupational physician/occupational health nurse)

Measuring Performance

  • Evaluation of indices of health with emphasis on leading indicators
